About this House
The Riverfront Retreat is a true piece of history which provides an excellent place for those who are looking to get away for a weekend or extended stay.
Built in 1944 as the areas first single room schoolhouse, the Riverfront Retreat was lovingly taken apart, board by board, by the current owner's late parents. During the Second World War, at a time when the future was uncertain and times were tough, they reconstructed it into a cozy little cottage on a parcel of wooded land along the banks of the Wapsipinicon River.
Located just 3 miles outside the quaint little town of Central City, Iowa it was half a day walk to get there. But now, 75+ years later, this beautiful, fully furnished 1 bedroom historic cottage, has been thoroughly updated to provide all the comforts of modern living while maintaining many of it's unique, historic characteristics you rarely find today.
Located just steps from the waters edge, the cottage hosts a variety of wildlife and creates the perfect ambiance for fishing, bird watching, canoeing, kayaking and more. Whether you choose to sit and relax on the deck with a favorite book, cast a line in the water for some excellent fishing, explore the wooded areas that abound, or navigate the beautiful sights and sounds of nature on the Wapsipinicon River, the peaceful quietness and comfortable accommodations of this rural cottage are sure to provide the much needed rest you deserve.

Relaxing and fun getaway
My wife and spent a much needed getaway at the Riverfront Retreat. The cabin was perfect for the two of us. We kayak'd the Wapsi River and met some fun people along the way. The town of Central City is charming and fun. Nancy was an incredible host. We plan to stay in touch with her. I'm hesitant to let the secret out about this retreat, but must highly recommend it!

Chilling Out
I was looking for a quiet escape for the weekend and this property served it up well and. With the view if the river and surrounding woods it was perfect for setting in the Sun and watching the fire in the fire pit. Keep in mind it is fall hunting season so you will hear shot guns but not enough to be concerning at least not for me. I plan on scheduling this same weekend next year.

Nice, quiet getaway
This was the perfect getaway from our very crazy, busy schedule! Beautiful, simple, and a perfect way to reconnect. Setting was as described and although the cabin is tiny-it was clean and overall pretty comfortable for the two of us.
